In summer 2017 I started the new “Inspiring Girls Expeditions” program “Girls in Icy Fjords”, which was funded through one of my NSF research grants. Inspiring Girls Expeditions are tuition free wilderness programs for high school girls from all backgrounds, focused on science, art and outdoor activities. Girls in Icy Fjords took place for the first time nearby Bear Glacier, Seward Alaska in August 2017. We had an awesome group of enthusiastic young ladies from all over the United States, Mexico and even India! The curriculum focused on the effects of climate change and ocean acidification on coastal processes, marine ecosystems and coastal communities, and also included training in leadership skills and sea kayaking.
